Prom Fashion!

So it's Prom season and I wanted to give some insight and direction on how to style and coordinate for this occasion. This is usually the first time a young man or young woman enters my flower shop and they look overwhelmed and confused. Some of the high school students leave it up to their mom's to shop for them. So, I want to help guide and give you an idea of how to look good for those photographs! I decided to write some tips on how prom style should be approached. Style is never taught in school haha so people don't understand how to go about looking awesome! Well, I am here to help! I am eccentric, I know, but that doesn't mean everyone should be wild and out there. Be you!  I will help make that happen.
I know that we all desire to shop online but for this occasion you get the best results to go to your local flower shop. Many times I get a phone call about ordering and when I ask the color of the dress the response given is in a shade that's incorrect. For example, many people mix up turquoise and teal. Prom is an experience so go experience all it has to offer. Don't be afraid to go out and speak to a Designer. Also, plan ahead! Flowers sell out fast! Order ahead of time and you'll be stress free!
What to expect? When you go to your local flower shop the Designer will ask you some questions. Helpful things to take with you is a picture of the dress and/or the fabric. Designers like to know the style as well because flowers have personality that can match your dress! Elegant, Flirty, Classy, etc. your flowers can mirror the style you are going for. In this article, I want to sum up some challenges many face about fashion and style for prom. Be open and know that your Floral Designer wants you to look amazing!

The Dress! It's all about the dress! Choose a dress that fits right! Important! Too tight, and your body will not only yell at you all night but you will be showing off parts of you that you don't want seen! Too big and you look like you are overweight. So no matter how beautiful the dress is make sure it's your size. Take measurements with you as you shop. This can be helpful to choosing your correct size.
The Color! Ok, this is where mistakes are made! You found a dress that fits awesome! Yay! And the color is absolutely goregous! SCORE! Then here's where everything goes wrong, and wrong fast! You begin to think EVERYTHING has to be the EXACT SAME color as your amazing dress. WRONG! Colors blend extremely well and seriously, I can not express that enough. Look at creation! If the grass were blue to match the skies it would take away the separation to know which is sky and which is ground! And even the night sky have shades of dark blues, light blues, oranges, and pinks.  Why do hunters dress to match the trees? So, they are camoflauged! Why, do you want your date to match exactly to your dress color and your prom accessories, flowers, etc.???
Let's look at nature, colors are beautiful and blend on the feathers of birds.

Most people are intimitated in this area so they choose to play is safe! They decide their date should simply wear black and white and have a tie that matches the exact same color as their dress. SNOOZE! Then, they decide on the corsage! And I've seen it a million times. They pick out the color of ribbon to match EXACTLY to the dress and then want white flowers.  When, I make a suggestion they stare at me as though I've lost my mind. The guys can be pretty cool about letting me design and trusting because they have no clue, HA! But girls and moms, need to trust the Designer. Designers WANT these girls to look good! Why in the world would we ever want to send someone out with ugly all over their wrist! Never, ever, ever do I want that! Please trust your Designers.
Ok, so let's take a look at examples of being stylish with all these lovely shades of color.
The Black Dress:
Wearing black does not always mean plain black ribbon and white flowers. If you are simply wanting a black and white look then it can be classy, yes. But also, what can be stunning is a pop of color. Add red roses to your corsage for a very sharp, classy look.
Just about any color will work with a black canvas. Don't be limited to black and white. Hot pink, light pink, blue, purple. Be bold with your accessories! How sharp your date would be in a classic black and white suit with a red rose boutonniere! That would be Hollywood Glam!
The Neutrals:

Neutral Colors can be elegant and safisticated. They can be lush and romantic. So, if you opt for the neutrals let's explore some options that coincide with the more natural shades.  Majolica (Majolika) Cream Spray Roses are soft and romantic to compliment those neutral shades. Also, White Dendrobium Orchids are elegant against Golds, Champagnes, & other neutral tones. Blush! Oh wow! Blush is so romantic against neautral tones.
There are some cream spray roses that will almost look light pink. This is an excellent way with adding color without being over the top.

THE BLUE ORCHID:

Royal Blue, Light Blue, Dark Purple, Turquoise, or even a white dress? This flower's got ya covered! The beauty about an array of colors is that the color that is predominate with your dress or flower will be drawn out of what you are wearing. My eyes change color to whatever hair color I'm sporting (remember eccentric) or item of clothing I wear. The blue orchid will pull purple out if you are wearing purple and blue if you are wearing blue. Also, these orchids look amazing combined with another color of spray rose. XOXO offers a combination of orchids and spray roses. We have designed these beautiful orchids with hot pink roses to compliment a fun and flirty dress!

Color combinations are so fun! Don't be afraid to mix it up! The photo below features a fucshia orchid with orange spray roses and hot pink ribbon. Daring and Fun! We also combine Roses and Orchid Boutonnieres as well! Orchid and Spray Rose Combinations give you many color options for a great value!

The Guys! Ok, so the same rules above apply. Guys do not have to be boring. Play with colors. If your dress is a shade of green, your guy would look snazzy with a dark green suit and pale green or blue button down shirt. The green suit will compliment your green hues without him sacrificing his masculinity. Green orchids, succulents or simple baby’s breath will be a wonderful natural look for this style. That blue Orchid may be a nice touch as well!!!
Don't Settle with a black suit and white button down!!! Color is much more fun!
If we look at this hummingbird and see the colors flow through this little guy, you can get an idea of what colors will blend with your attire. You can see that dark blue would be an amazing color for your date to pull off!

THE BOLD:
Oranges, Pinks, & Yellows
These bold colors are super fun and flirty! The courageous wear these colors and look amazing!
Pink will blend nicely with the 2 other bold colors. Fuchsia and Orange, are a great look!

Yellow is extremely fun with Hot Pink but if you like it to stand out with no other color, I suggest gray or silver. Stunning! Yellow spray roses with pale yellow ribbon would be a softer style to pull of as well! A gray or silver dress with yellow flowers would be a fun accent too.

No matter what dress you choose, let your Designer get a good visual. The best way is to go directly to your local flower shop and speak to the Designer and choose your own accessories and flowers.
It's a fun experience so live it up!

XOXO,
Jamie June
